From Hand to Screen to Surface

I am delighted to be able to share this video clip from my Creative Live online class "From Hand to Screen to Surface" which I recorded back in October of 2014.

Here is a short description of the class:

Many designers are so well-versed in the art of working digitally that the idea of creating things by hand can feel daunting – but it doesn’t have to. Join Molly Hatch for Pattern Design: From Hand to Screen to Surface and revisit the tactile experience of making images.
Handcrafted artwork and patterns can open new doors for you – both creatively and professionally. In this course, you’ll learn how to develop a creative process that combines hand work with digital to get results you and your clients will love. You’ll learn how to:
  • Create repeat patterns by hand, using cut paper and block repeats
  • Scan and adjust patterns in Photoshop
  • Hand-color line art to capture unique textures
  • Give companies and clients the handmade look they’re craving
If you’re ready to make your designs more unique, more appealing to clients, and more of a reflection of who you are as a designer, this is the course for you!

A lot went into the making of the 8hr class--there are great downloadable bonus materials, including step by step instructions for the two pattern making techniques I demonstrate. The section of the day that I enjoyed the most was discussing ways to get your work published and how to find companies to work with in several short interviews I did with an Editor at Chronicle Books, Art Director at Blend Fabrics and an interview with a buyer from Anthropologie!

Here are some shots from behind the scenes of filming the live class back in October:

And some fabulous results from students in the class:
